As soon as the twins were born i was relieved from the great pain of giving birth. I saw them in the doctor's hands and loved them instantly. After being cleaned, the doctor handed the girl to my husband, Roshon, and i took the boy in my weak arms. As i held him for the first time, it seemed as if the lights grew brighter, and all of Heaven's angels started to sing. It was a beautiful moment, one that i will treasure forever.
I looked over at Roshon, and he was touching the girl's forehead lightly, as if he were drawing symbols, or a picture. He had a strange look on his face, but i didn't think much about it. Then he came and sat beside me on the hospital bed. A single tear slid down my cheek and on to the collar of my hospital gown. Then the boy looked up and smiled at me. I said, "He is beautiful. My little Adelphia." Immediately he giggled, and touched my face. His hand was so small and soft. His skin was light and silky, like butterscoch. His beautiful, tawny eyes shined in the light of the lamp on the table beside my bed. He had long dark curly hair like his father, who seemed obsessed with our daughter.
When i looked over at my new daughter, her eyes were closed and she was curled up in Roshon's arms. I could see through her eyelids that she had my beautiful dark brown eyes. Her skin was lighter than his. Like sand on a tropical beach. Though, she did not have as much hair as her brother. I tried to tickle her, but she flinched then resumed her original position. I guessed that she was a little sleepy. Their skin was a soft and silky. "Ahh, and my beautiful Tamara." It was a perfect moment, it made me want to hold them in my arms forever. We had a long moment of silence in the room. Then nurse came and disturbed the silence, to take them away to the nursery. It felt like hours that we sat there in silence, but i still could not believe that i had just given birth to beautiful fraternal twins.Once she left, I shot my husband an exhausted look, and rested my head on the pillow.
The next day i went home with my beautiful babies. The house was cleaner than ever, dishes were done, floors were swept and vacuumed. I was impressed, i expected to come home to more work. But for once it was already done so i could rest. "Wow," I said, "It looks nice in here. Did you do all of this?"
"Yes, that's why i went home so early yesterday." He said smiling. "So i could make sure your arrival back home would be nice and comfortable." He had Tamara in one hand, with the other he put his arm around me and asked. "Do you like it?"
"Yes i do. Thank you." I kissed him on the cheek, and went into our room where I sat all her baggage down, turned the television on, and flopped on the bed beside Adelphia and Tamara.
Roshon was taking pictures of us for the webpage of my photography business, 'Capture The Moment'. It was starting to take off. We had clients scheduled for the next five weeks. At this point in out lives everything was going great. It couldn't be better.
One week after the twins were born, everyone was asleep. The house was silent. All the lights were off, except for the hallway light. At exactly twelve o'clock midnight, I heard a pan drop in the kitchen. My eyes shot open. Frightened, i sat up and looked around. I heard a soft voice in the darkness, like a babies. I realized the sound had woke up Tamra. But instead of crying, she sat there and giggled, as if someone was tickling her.
"Babe." I shook Roshon awake. "Babe wake up!" He opened one eye and turned on the lamp beside his side of the bed.
"Is there any particular reason you decided to wake me up this early in the morning?" He wiped his tired eyes and starred at me.
I shot him a serious look that said 'I'm scared to death, please wake up' "Baby, I think there's someone in the house. I heard something in the kitchen, it sounded like a pan dropped. Can you please go check it out for me?" I quickly handed him one of the emergency knifes that i keep in the top drawer of my night stand.
He sat up and stretched. "Ugggh," he groaned. "Fine," He stuck it in his pajama pants, and took his baseball bat just in case. I tried to put Tamara back to sleep, but as soon as i picked her up she cried louder than ever before. I was surprised how Adelphia had been sleeping through all of that. Although because of Tamara's loud crying, eventually he did. However, he did not cry. He just laid in his bed and smiled at me. And I nervously smiled back, while bouncing and rocking Tamara.
No matter how much I bounced her, sang to her, shushed her, she didn't stop crying. So i finally gave up and I laid her back down in her bed, and she resumed giggling. I was curious about what in the world she could be giggling about, but i did not put much thought into it because it was still half asleep. Tamara's giggling was getting very annoying. I was about to scream 'Shut up!' when Roshon finally came back and said "No one is here."
"What?" I said
"No one is here," He repeated. " I'm guessing the pans just fell, there's no sign of any person being in our house. I checked, the doors and windows are still locked, everything is secure." He shook his head and looked at me with his tired eyes.
"Well how did the pans fall if were in the stove, and in the back of the cabinets?" I gave him a scared look, and hugged my legs. "Somethings gotta be in here." I said, fear escaping with my words. With a sudden burst of courage I jumped up and ran to the door, took the bat out of his hand. "I know the pans didn't just fall. Someone's gotta be in here, and i'm going to find out who it is."
Walking down the hall my courage quickly faded into nothing. My arms and legs trembled with every step i took. My facial expression was as fearless as a warriors, but on the inside i was afraid for my life. Every small sound shot shivers down my spine. The little creeks in the floor as i stepped. The hushed sound of the wind whistling through the trees outside the window. The quiet 'tick tock' of the silver clock that hung over the television in the living room.
I eased into the kitchen, and flicked on the light. The entire room was empty. It was just our normal kitchen. I could hear Roshon's footsteps behind me. "I know what i heard." I said without looking behind me. I had paused to listen to muffled giggling of Tamara in our room. "Tamara clearly heard it too."
Roshon came and hugged me from behind. "Babe there's nothing here, and if there is, in the morning i'll do an extreme search of the house, just so you can feel secure. Okay?" He hugged me tighter and kissed my head. "Aubrie, Nothings gonna hurt us, and if something does i will protect you, its my job right.? Now go lay down and go back to sleep. Everything will be alright." This reassured me, but only enough to get me through that night. Eventually, I fell asleep.
Just keep running. He can't hurt me if he can't find me. Then the voice screamed from behind me "There's nowhere to hide! I WILL find you and kill you!" I heard a tree fall from the same direction as the voice. Then there was another voice. A very familiar one, it whispered, "Aubrie. Aubrie." When I turned back I saw a giant oak tree about to flatten me. I covered my face with my arms as if i could actually block the tree from crushing me. I heard the tree fall, but I was still whole.
I was in some kind of meadow. Then The sun shone so bright I was nearly blinded. 'But its night time,' I thought, looking at my watch. It read 3:23. I noticed the sun was slowly getting dimmer. In minutes the sun had become a moon, and it was freezing. cold. I still only had my pajamas on. They were green-blue silk pants with white tulips and a black spaghetti strap tank top. Overall my pajamas provided no warmth. Then I heard a low hum coming from all directions. It gradually got louder, but i just sat there. Finally the murmur was close, i could feel their presence. Then in the horizon i could see dark heads, getting bigger, getting closer. They were finally close enough that I could recognize that those figures were shadows, unaccompanied by bodies, walking towards me. It was then that i got up out of the grass to run away. But i couldn't i was surrounded. A small stench covered the air, and got stronger as the drew closer. I knew that i had met my end, but i did not know what to do about it. I couldn't run, I couldn't hide. Then again i heard the whisper "Aubrie. Aubrie." So I ducked down and covered myself as much as I could. Moments later the humming stopped.
I looked up and saw that I was in some hospital room. No, it was the exact hospital room that I was in a week ago. I walked over to the bed, and saw myself sleeping in the bed, with both Tamara and Adelphia sleeping in my arms. For a while i smiled. But then a single shadow, black as midnight, seeped up through the floorboard and hovered over Tamara. Then it froze, and raced into her body. I could see the spirit swimming through her veins. Her eyes jerked open, her eyes, once a beautiful Brown, were now a demonic black. Out of all the things I had just seen, this was the one that I feared the most. Again I heard the familiar voice whispering "Aubrie, Aubrie" This Time I ignored it. I shook my head with denial and stepped backward until i hit the wall. Tears dripped down my face. I tried to slide down the wall and sit on the floor, but i fell through.
I had fallen into a hole. When i looked up i could see the fading light of the hospital lamp. And i looked below me only to see the growing darkness of this bottomless pit. I heard hellish snickers as more of the same dark spirits that swarmed me. 'Hehehehe' They all creepily laughed. I closed my eyes and wished it all away. I didn't want to open them, I had seen enough. That's when I had reached the bottom.
It was nice, soft, comfortable. I finally opened my eyes to realize that it was my bed. The sun was shining. It was a bright and beautiful day. I looked over at the clock, and it read 9:14. When I turned over I saw that Roshon was missing, and so were the twins. I head a mini heard attack, and rushed out of the bed. I slipped on my slippers, and flung my robe over my shoulders. I ran down the halls only to see that they were all sitting at the table eating their breakfast. "Where are you going?" Roshon said while spooning baby food into Tamara's mouth.
I froze in place and ignored the question. Looking over at me, Tamara smiled. She had her normal beautiful brown eyes again. "I-I was just looking for you," I said relieved. How come you didn't wake me up for breakfast?"
"You looked like you were having a good sleep, and I didn't wanna wake you. And they were hungry, so I just went ahead and made breakfast."
"I really looked like I was having a good sleep? Try a nightmare." I said while taking a seat at the table next to him.
"Oh, what about?"
I rested my head on his shoulder. "Its far too much to explain right now. I'll tell you when they go take a nap."
"Okay, that's fine with me."
